KNIGHTDALE — Softball coach Ben Vessa calls Hannah Short the brick and mortar of his program.

Next year, the Knight shortstop hopes to be part of the foundation of a new Division I program at N.C. Central University.

The KHS senior signed a scholarship offer with the Eagles Thursday afternoon as her parents, teammates and school administrators looked on.

In signing with the Eagles, Short becomes the first player in the history of Knightdale High School to earn a softball scholarship to a Division I college.

“She’s the best defensive shortstop I’ve ever seen,” Vessa said of his star infielder. “She’s got great anticipation. She’s willing to dive for balls no other shortstop is willing to go after.”

Short has a strong arm to match her aggressive effort. Vessa says that arm has forced him to consider moving her around to different positions, but he has resisted.

“I’ve thought about putting her in different positions. But she’s so helpful at shortstop. She keeps the outfielders and the rest of the infield aware of what’s going on. When there’s a play, I want the ball in her hands,” Vessa said.

Short said she accepted the offer to play softball at Central because of academics.

“They’ve got a really good criminal justice program there and that’s what I’m interested in studying,” Short said.

A four-year team captain at Knightdale, Short says she expects to play the same position for the Eagles.

“I think my defensive skills and my leadership skills are the best things I’ll bring to Central,” she said.
