Wendell — East Wake High School pulled off two wins against two teams tied for second in the Greater Neuse River Conference last week.

Thursday night at Holly Springs, Sean Anders pitched a complete, five-hit game. He struck out five and walked one.

The leading hitters for East Wake were Drew Alford (1-2, one RBI, two BB), Taylor Griswold (1-4, one double, one run), Matt Dickens (2-4, two runs), Garrett Johnson (1-3) and David Lanier (2-2, two RBIs, two runs).

The Warriors scored two runs in the second to go up 2-0, then Lanier picked up a big, two-out single in the fourth to drive in two runs. The team added three more in that inning to go up 7-0.

“That was all Sean needed to finish out the game,” coach Kerry Kincaid said. “I really like the way the guys are competing right now. It would have been easy to give up on the season, but they have shown a lot of heart.”

The next night the team took on Smithfield-Selma High School in Wendell.

Grant McGlothlin pitched the final 4 2/3 innings in relief of Adam Stephenson. McGlothlin, now recovered from an ankle injury, gave up only one run on two hits and struck out seven, securing the win as pitcher.

Leading hitters for East Wake were Matt Hunichen (2-4, one double, two runs), Alford (3-4, one double, one RBI, two runs), Dickens (2-2, one double, two RBIs, two runs), Justin O’Brien (1-4, one run), Johnson (2-3, one triple, three RBIs, one run), Greg Jones (2-3, one RBI) and Lanier (1-3).

Smithfield-Selma was up 4-2 going into the fifth when Alford singled to start off. With one out, Dickens doubled to left to bring Alford home.

O’Brien made it to first on an error, and then Garrett Johnson sent a one-out triple to right field, driving in two runs to give the Warriors the 5-4 lead.

Jones followed with a single up the middle to bring in Johnson, and make the score 6-4.

East Wake added three more in the sixth.

Hunichen and Alford hit back-to-back doubles. Dickens followed and singled with one out to bring home Alford. O’Brien then singled and Johnson followed with a walk. Lanier’s two-out walk brought home Dickens to make the score 9-4.

McGlothlin gave a lead-off home run to start the seventh, making the score 9-5, but got back to work and finished deal.
