SMITHFIELD - Clayton and Garner made the biggest splashes Thursday night as Smithfield-Selma and the Greater Neuse River 4-A Conference baptized the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center with a pair of quad meets.
Garner relied on its numbers to register a sweep of Wake County rivals East Wake, Knightdale and Southeast Raleigh in the nightcap. Clayton boys used eight event victories along with four second-place finishes and seven thirds while amassing 199 points in splashing away from runner-up West Johnston, which scored a pair of event wins en route to 115 points. Smithfield-Selma, with 94 points placed third while Harnett Central managed 79 points.
Garner's boys used four first-place finishes along with five seconds, a pair of thirds and five fourths in out-distancing Southeast, which tallied four wins and four seconds, 154-114. East Wake managed a pair of event victories to place third with 91 points while Knightdale, despite low numbers, earned a pair of firsts in finishing with 55 points.
Garner's girls almost matched their male counterparts, posting 142 points on the strength of three wins, four seconds, three thirds and three fourths in turning back East Wake, which tallied 103 with two event wins and four seconds. Southeast Raleigh, despite four event wins and four runner-up efforts, managed just 97 points, edging out Knightdale, which tallied 87, for third.
Max Khuns and John Eubanks led Garner with individual wins in the 100 free and 50 free, resepctively in times of 58.80 and 25.31. Khuns and Eubanks were joined by Collin Kroll and Chris Sutton on the winning 400 free relay team, which captured the event in 4:00.99, as well as the 200 free relay, winning with a time of 1:44.01.
The relay win came in a time of 1:58.28.
Knightdale picked up its lone win when Trent Morton picked up the victory in the 100 breast in 1:12.50 while third-place finishes were recorded by Morton in the 50 free, and Chris Cardamone in the 100 back and 500 free. East Wake saw Macon Crowder churn his way to a pair of victories, winning the 500 free in 4:59.72 and the 200 IM in 2:08.64. Runner-up efforts were turned in by Austin Boyette in the 200 free and 100 back.
Knightdale, despite its limited numbers, got wins from Tyler Cornett in the 50 free in a time of 29.12 and Tatianna Blount in the 100 free in 1:11.11.
Third place efforts were turned in by Ahnjeannette Nelson in the 50 free, Alexis Cope in the 500 free, Ellen Shaw in the 100 free, the 200 medley and 200medley relays.
Allison Privette and Lauren Frederick came home with top honors for East Wake in the 200 free and 100 breast, respectively. Privette won her event in a time of 2:31.79, while Frederick claimed the breastroke in 1:27.83.Privette also swam to a runer-up finish in the 100 fly, while other second-place showings came from Spencer Sanderson in the100 free, and Erica Frederick in the 500 free and the 200 free relay team.
