WENDELL - Jamal Davis staked East Wake to a two-touchdown lead in the first half and the Warriors made it hold up in the second against a game West Johnston club.

Davis intercepted a Mark Sudman pass on the opening drive and scored on a five-yard run to cap East Wake's first offensive effort with 2:11 remaining in the first quarter. Davis made his presense known again on special teams when he recovered a blocked punt in the end zone with 9:41 left in the second quarter to send the Warriors (3-4, 2-1) to the locker room in good shape at half time.

East Wake coach Jimmy Williams turned the offense over to senior running back Khari Jenkins in the second half. Jenkins punished the Wildcats (2-5, 1-2), racking all of his 150 yards on the ground in the second half. Warrior coaches found the solution for every West Johnston defensive scheme. After Jenkins found room to run up the middle of the Wildcat defense, West Johnston started pinching their tackles. Jenkins just took the ball to the outside and kept picking up yardage in chunks.

Jenkins extended East Wake's lead to 20 with a 19-yard run with 8:15 left in the third quarter.

And as quick as East Wake started counting a win, West Johnston fueled up its air attack. Senior quarterback Mark Sudman tossed a 35-yard touchdown pass to Tyruss Colton to finish a 42-yard drive with 1:29 left in the third quarter.

The Wildcats kept attacking through the air in the fourth quarter when Sudman found Colton streaking down the right sideline. The pair connected for their second score of the half on a 57-yard catch and run to cut the East Wake lead to six at 20-14 with 10:56 left to play in the game.

West Johnston had another short field a few minutes later, but couldn't convert thanks to a big defensive stop by linebacker Mike Ingles, who sacked Sudman for a 12-yard loss when the Wildcats were inside the East Wake 20.

Jenkins salted the game away for East Wake on the Warriors' next possession, racing 55 yards down the left sideline to boost the lead back to 12 at 26-14 with just 3:51 left to go in the game.

For the game, Jenkins carried the ball 16 times for 150 yards. Davis gathered 27 yards on 8 carries and John Barnes Smith added 25 yards on seven runs. Quarterback Chris Pernell had a quiet game for East Wake through the air, finishing 2-6 for 19 yards.

Sudman was 10-15 for 157 yards and two TDs, but he also threw two picks. East Wake kept Wildcat running back C.J. Frederick in check most of the game, limiting him to just 18 yards on 12 carries. As a team, West Johnston found yardage on the ground a tough thing to come by. As a team, the Wildcats finished with 22 carries for minus 7 yards.
