GARNER - Garner continued its run of homecoming victories, making it 26 in a row with a 38-20 victory over Greater Neuse River 4-A Conference rival Knightdale Friday night at Trojan Stadium.

Garner sophomore Juwan Moye ran for 142 yards and scored three touchdowns including two long runs from scrimmage and set up another with a long pass to help beat winless Knightdale.

Garner (4-3 overall, 2-1 conference) streaked out to a 21-0 second-quarter lead after Moye ripped off 68 yard score on the first play from scrimmage and then scored another with a 53-yard romp late in the second quarter. The Trojan's Isiah Moore blocked a Knightdale punt that was recovered and returned for six points by teammate Devonte Atkinson.

"We had some good runs on offense and the blocked punt was big," said Garner coach Nelson Smith. "We're a very young team. We've got to get better at tackling and not making rookie mistakes."

The Trojans, who moved above the .500 mark for the first time this season, had a chance to shut out the Knights in the first half but, perhaps their youthful exuberance may have cost them. Instead of running out the second quarter clock, a fumble out of bounds at their own 11-yard-line stopped the clock and forced them to punt the ball back to Knightdale with just enough time to run a play.

The Knights took their one shot at the end zone with eleven seconds remaining on the clock. A Ben Bolling fade pass for 32 yards to Ira Tripp broke the Knight scoring silence and gave them a little momentum going into halftime.

And although Knightdale pulled to within seven points in the third quarter, on a 12-yard touchdown by Terrence Davis, Garner never panicked.

The Trojans, (2-1 in conference) utilized their new two-quarterback offense with Lemond Johnson spelling Senior Cody Woodall on alternate possessions.

Garner's Connor Torruella gave the Trojans a little breathing room with a 31-yard field goal and Marques Townsend stretched lead to 31-14 with a power run up the middle for 1 yard and pay dirt.

Knightdale responded immediately when Aaron Smith scampered for an 85-yard touchdown return of the ensuing kick-off. Now down by just 11 with the entire fourth quarter remaining, Knightdale still had hope. However, their attempt at an onside kick was recovered by Garner at midfield.

"We didn't do a very good job of capitalizing on some good situations we had." Knightdale coach Kamelio Johnson said. "Garner made very few mistakes and we made too many. And it doesn't get any easier after this."

The Knights meet Harnett Central this Friday night, while the Trojans will visit the Smithfield-Selma squad coached by Trojan legend Anthony Barbour.

Garner tacked on the final score after Moye took a fake toss right, pulled up and hit James Skillern with a halfback option pass. Skillern was downed at the 2-yard-line and Moye ran it in on the next play for the final score of the game.
