WENDELL - Three All-Star teams were honored at the Aug. 24 town board meeting for a season chocked full of achievement in the baseball and softball world.
In the 2009 season, the 9-10 All-Star baseball team boasted a 14-2 record.
The team won three tournaments - the Southern Johnston Invitational (a total of four games), the Statewide Athletic Committee East Regional (five games) and the SWAC state championship (three games). These represent three wins out of the four tournaments the team competed in this summer.
The 11-12 All-Star softball team went 7-1 on the season and won two major tournaments; the Tar Heel League District 6 tourney (four games), and the Tar Heel League State Championship (three games).
The big-game win marked the first ever girls state championship for the town.
The third team honored was the 13-14 All-Star baseball squad, which won four tourneys and amassed a 14-0 record over the 2009 season.
Like the younger team, the group won the Southern Johnston Invitational Championship (three games) and the SWAC East Regional (four games), and took first in the Tar Heel League District 6 tourney (three games) and Tar Heel League State Championship (four games), just like their younger, female counterparts.
Coach Scott Hawke, of the 13-14 All-Star team, has now coached three different age groups that have brought the state championships back to Wendell.
