Planter's Walk

Numerous down-to-the-wire relays punctuated an exciting win for Planter’s Walk on June 23 when the Piranhas took out the Southall Seahorses 275-229.

The 13-14 boys medley relay team was trailing by about four strokes when Seth Wheeler dove in for the butterfly leg and took the lead. Doug Lewis brought home the win a solid freestyle lap.

The 15-18 girls medley relay team, with Bayley Harmon, Ellen Shaw, Sierra Wheeler and Christin Birchard, was neck-and-neck until Birchard pulled away in the freestyle leg for the win.

Both 9-10 relay teams — Trent Dameron, Cameron Mays, Charlie Woodlief and Reese Wynn for the boys, and Nicole Bertrand, Samantha Darlington, Lillie Lawrence and Brenna Hardy for the girls — fought down to the last stroke, only to be out-touched at the end. The 13-14 boys pulled out the win.

Triple winners for the night were Wynn for the 9-10 boys, Kelsey Moore for the 13-14 girls and Lee Addison for the 15-18 boys. Moore set a pool record in the freestyle at 26.16 seconds.

Stopwatch winners for the week were Caleb Darlington (16.87 seconds in the 6U backstroke), Ryan Bodnarik (31.56 seconds in the 7-8 butterfly), Michael Palko (39 seconds in the 7-8 butterfly), Branden Pierce (18.10 seconds in the 7-8 boys butterfly), Trent Walker (29 seconds in the 7-8 boys butterfly), Eric Godette (35.85 seconds in the 13-14 boys backstroke), and Chris Clifford (12.40 seconds in the 13-14 boys butterfly).

The depth of the Piranhas’ 15-18 boys team was in full display at the meet given that the Seahorses had no boys in that age bracket. Planter’s Walk is sporting 13 in that age group on its team.

Zebulon

The Zebulon Dolphins took one on the chin in last Tuesday’s meet, falling 149-353 to the J-Rays of the Jewish Community Center.

The home team out-numbered Zebulon 2.5-to-1 — there were 100 J-Ray swimmers to Zebulon’s 40.

When power in numbers becomes the issue in the swimming realm, relays can prove costly, and they did. Zebulon’s 11-plus-aged swimmers outscored those at the Jewish Community Center, but the home team’s 10-and-under-aged swimmers outscored Zebulon by a significantly greater difference.

Despite the loss, Zebulon had four triple winners including Rachel Crowder, Hamilton Brantley, Macon Crowder and Ryan Worley.
