Wendell — Weeks of hard work brought rewards last week for students at Wendell Elementary School. The school’s annual science fair came to a close Thursday night in front of a packed house as students and family members crowded around principal Winston Pierce to find out who won the top prizes in this year’s fair.Behind them stood rows of display boards featuring the results of experiments related to a variety of topics from electricity to soil erosion.Fifth-grader Alexa Bird won the Dr. Jack Bailey Science Award as the top winner in this year’s event. Her experiment was titled “Magnets — Can they move objects?”Other winners included fifth-graders Avian Darr, first place; Lauren Thiede, second place; and Marlow Sherrill, third place.Fourth-grade winners were Grace Pippin, first place; Taylor Wall, second place; and Alysa Dent, third place.Third-grade winners were Isaiah Lucas, first place; Skylar Pritchett, second place; and Reed Miller, third place.First- and second-grade students were also allowed to participate in the science fair, although their entries were not judged as part of the competition. The science fair experience will come in handy for students next year as the school changes the focus of its magnet program to a curriculum that is more science-based than the current gifted and talented program.
