Regardless of where you live in eastern Wake County, I hope you will take a little time on Saturday to attend the open house at the new Zebulon Municipal Complex. The event runs from 1-4 p.m. There will be official ceremonies beginning at 2 p.m. Sandwiched around them will be opportunies for you to wander around the two buildings. As long as I can remember, the Wakelon School has been a major landmark in Zebulon.By the time I came along, the school was no longer Wakelon. It had been renamed Zebulon Elementary. When I first entered the school, it was actually the temporary home for Wendell Elementary, which was undergoing reconstruction in the late 1970s or early 1980s.It was a grand building then. GlaxoSmithKline deserves credit for preserving the main buildings when it bought the property after Wendell Elementary was completed. Now, the town has made sure the building will serve another enduring purpose. The renovation isn’t the first time I’ve seen a school renovated for a town hall. Oxford, in Granville County, did the same thing in the early 1990s and they preserved a landmark in that town as well, although the effort didn’t enjoy the public support the Zebulon project has.I think you’ll be impressed by the work the town has done. It certainly shines a positive light on the town.
