ZEBULON — William Douglas Cauley died March 15 after a short and courageous battle with cancer. Funeral was March 19 in Mitchell Funeral Home chapel, Raleigh. Burial with military honors was at Raleigh Memorial Park.

Although he was known by his family and friends as William, Doug and Bill, his most important names were Grandpa and Dad. He was born in Kinston Jan. 3, 1946, and fought four hard years during the Vietnam War in the U.S. Army and the 82nd Airborne Division. He graduated from East Carolina University and worked as a businessman all of his life in sales. He loved boating and fishing every chance he had. He was the son of the late Annie Lee Murphy, formerly of New Bern.

Surviving: his longtime love, Janine Leigh Joyner; daughter, Shannon Leigh Deaton and husband Mike of Raleigh; grandchildren, Austin and Samantha; brother, Larry Cauley of South Carolina; several nieces, nephews and cousins, including Robert Cauley and wife Vanda of Zebulon.
