KNIGHTDALE -- The stepdaughter of a local minister was arrested Wednesday in his June 4 slaying, and more arrests are expected, according to the Wake County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators charged Carletta Patrice Alston, 24, of 1808 Lucas Road in Knightdale, with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Michael Donnell Smith.

Smith, a 48-year-old truck driver and co-pastor at Truth and Deliverance International Ministries, was shot to death in the gravel driveway of the home he shared with Alston and her mother, Phyllis Ann Smith.

Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison declined to release a motive in the shooting, according to Phyllis Stephens, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's office. But Harrison said more arrests are expected in the case, according to Stephens.

Shortly after 3:30 a.m. on June 4, Wake County deputies responded to the Lucas Road home because of a 911 call from Phyllis Smith reporting a gunshot outside the house. When deputies arrived, they found Michael Smith lying in his driveway.

The 911 recordings of the shooting paint a painful picture of a hysterical wife and stepdaughter, who said they were too afraid to go outside after hearing the gunshot. Alston called her stepfather's cell phone repeatedly, while her mother begged a dispatcher to hurry and send someone to help them.

According to Michael Smith's mother, Carolyn Hines, her son leaves behind three children of his own, including 12-year-old twins.

Phyllis Smith could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Alston is being held at the Wake County jail without bail. Court records show no prior criminal history for Alston.
