Zebulon — A local resident and a Pikeville woman engaged in a dispute at the Murphy USA gas station on Gannon Avenue last Tuesday.

According to police reports, Mark Basham, 47, of Zebulon, was pumping gas at the station when Michelle Buchanan, 42, pulled in behind his vehicle in a compact model Ford vehicle.

Basham, apparently familar with Buchanan and previously angered by her driving, was pumping gas when he decided to confront her at her car window.

According to the police report, Basham did not appreciate Buchanan's gestures, an proceeded to strike Buchanan in the face several times with his bare hands.

As Buchanan began to back away, Basham began walking to his car. At that point, Buchanan backed her car up again, this time striking Basham twice with the vehicle.

Officers said Buchanan exited her vehicle as Basham stumble to his own. Buchanan then engaged in another verbal altercation with Basham before he got in his vehicle and left the station.

Buchanan reported Basham's license plate number to the police, but both were charged with a simple assault in the end.

Basham suffered minor injuries from the incident, including small cuts to his forearms from being knocked to the ground. Buchanan had several lacerations and a possible jaw injury, according to the report.
