CLAYTON - Clayton's police chief said inattention was a contributing factor in a traffic collision last Monday morning in which two 16-year-old boys were struck by a pickup truck near Clayton High School.

Chief Glenn Allen said both the driver and the teens may have been distracted and their vision obscured by vehicles in three other lanes of traffic.

Neither of the teens suffered serious injuries. Charges have not been filed in the case, Allen said.

Emergency workers transported Jackson Smith and Jacob Lowell, both of Clayton, to Johnston Medical Center in Clayton.

Smith may have a fractured lower leg, ankle or foot. Lowell had minor injuries, Allen said.

The accident happened about 7:30 a.m. while the boys were crossing the eastbound lane of U.S. 70 Business. The Chevrolet truck is owned by R&H Produce in Raleigh and was driven by Taris Lee Blalock, 62, of Knightdale.

Blalock was about to turn left onto Robertson Street near Clayton High, when he ran into the teens, police said.
