ZEBULON — Saturday’s scorching heat didn’t stop a steady flow of traffic to the Eastern Regional Center’s second annual Community Fun Day.

Visitors were able to take advantage of the various services the center offers, visit with town safety officials and enjoy hot dogs and a cool, much-needed beverage at the same time.

Information on everything from JobLink Career Centers to 4-H, child services, and even food stamp applications were available onsite.

“We wanted people to know we’re here and these are some of the services we offer,” center spokesperson Sonya Peterkin said.

Mayors Bob Matheny, of Zebulon, Russell Killen, of Knightdale, and Harold Broadwell, of Wendell, were present for Saturday’s event to dub the day Eastern Regional Center Day.

Broadwell read the proclamation to those in attendance.

“There was a great applause to it,” staffer Les Thompson said.

Those at the center said they were glad the mayors, as well as Community Advisory Committee members, were there.

“Each year we look forward to opening our doors,” Thompson said. “A lot of people still don’t know about us and what we have to offer, but when they find out they don’t have to drive way into Raleigh to get those services it changes things, so it’s a pretty good event for us.”

Tracy Woods is a good example of such a person. She said the commute to Zebulon is much more convenient with respect to her location, and she makes good use of the services the center offers.

“It was a very educational event and very fun — the kids loved it,” she said.

Woods said she picked up the flier for the event on her last trip to the Eastern Regional Center and she and her kids came on over. She said she wishes the center would hold Community Fun Day again.

“I would tell those who missed the event they missed out on some valuable community information,” she said.

Those at the center said they’re glad to see the community taking advantage of what it has to offer, while having fun in the mean time.
