Wake sheriff's detectives are searching for clues that might lead them to the killer of a 48-year-old man whose body was found this morning in the driveway of a home in Knightdale.

Sheriff's deputies found the victim, Michael Donnell Smith, shortly after 3:30 a.m. at 1808 Lucas Road, Phyllis Stephens, a sheriff's spokeswoman said today.

Investigators are looking for potential witnesses; early morning paper carriers who service the area, neighbors up early who may have seen a car or person in the area between 2:30 a.m. and 3:30 a.m.

"We are asking them to call if they might have seen anything," Stephens said. "Nothing's too trivial."

Deputies arrived at the residence in northern Wake County between Buffalo and Horton roads about 3:30 a.m. following 911 reports of gunshots heard in the area. They did not know if the victim lived at the residence.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call the Wake County Sheriff's Office at (919) 856-6911.
