Wendell — "We should be glad that we can still say 'one nation, under God,'" said Branch Jones of Wendell United Methodist Church at the National Day of Prayer event here May 1. “And we ask you, God, to forgive us that our nation has been taken from you in many instances.”

Jones, who was one of the six speakers from area churches, also talked about how many people either don’t know God or have forgotten Him. Due to a lack of faith, young people are killing each other, drivers involved in hit-and-runs don't stop to help, and many financial institutions are accused of deceitful practices, he said.

"We know that none of this honors You," he said.

While Jones touched upon some of the problems the society is facing, his message had a positive tone.

"We know that You know what is best for our whole nation and the people who lead it," he said.

The event, sponsored by the Triangle East Church Council, has been organized annually for more than 20 years. Like in previous years, the gathering, held at Wendell Town Hall, included several prayers and songs, such as "America the Beautiful" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic." Executive Director Ula Mae Life of the Wendell Chamber of Commerce played the piano and led the singing. The council also provided lunch at the end of the event.

For Dot Riggins, the gathering is something she does not want to miss. The retired secretary of Wendell Baptist Church said she appreciates the opportunity to pray together with others.

"And it’s a wonderful occasion to get together with people from different churches," Riggins said.
