KNIGHTDALE — A burglar took the last $75 of a Knightdale couple’s monthly income early Friday after forcing his way into their home at 2 a.m., the victim said.

Wake County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Phyllis Stephens confirmed a burglary at 5801 Seward Drive, Knightdale early Friday.

“We don’t want to say anything to endanger the integrity of the case,” said Stephens.

She said no arrests had been made, but that police had a description of the suspect.

“I heard a crackling noise and thought it was my cat and I opened the back door. A man came in and pushed me and said, ‘Where’s your money, where’s your money?’’’ Melanie Howell said.

Howell, 61, said the man took her purse with $75 and a debit card and ran out the door of the home she shares with her husband, Willard, 70.

She said the $75 was what was left of their disability and social security checks. Howell said the man shattered the glass in the door.

“I called the sheriff,” she said. “They came out with the bloodhounds.”

Howell said she left her purse on a table by her recliner when she came in from the grocery store Thursday night.

“That was going to last me until the end of the month,” she said. Howell said she was fortunate that her bills were paid and that she had groceries.

“I’ll be all right,” she said. “I hope they find him so he won’t do that to anybody else.” Stephens said anyone who saw or sees a suspicious person in the neighborhood should call 856-6911.
