Knightdale — A man walking along Knightdale Boulevard died Saturday after being hit by a pickup when he staggered and fell in the roadway, a police witness said.

Knightdale Police Chief Ricky Pope said Officer Ron Fullerton found Dwight G. Mile, 51, dead in the westbound lane of the 7900 block of Knightdale Boulevard at 11:15 p.m. on June 28. It happened in front of Debnam’s Paint and Body Shop, 7904 Knightdale Boulevard, the chief said.

Pope said Mile was walking home from a store. He lived at the Acres of Space Trailer Park nearby. Officers found alcohol containers in the road.

The driver of the truck, Roy Hannah Jr. of 1209 Clearwater Springs Drive, Raleigh, was not charged. He told police he only saw a man walking his dog down the street and then felt a bump.

A witness said Mile staggered and fell in the road, and was trying to get up when the truck hit him.

Knightdale Fire Department and Eastern Wake Rescue also responded.

The chief said he knew Mile and it was a difficult call to respond to.

“His father (Lank Mile) helped me barn tobacco 15 years ago,” he said.
