Wendell — Young athletes will likely see a much more modest increase than originally suggested in the fees they pay to play baseball in Wendell.

Following a parade of speakers opposed to the large rate hikes at a meeting Monday night, Wendell commissioners backed away from the idea at a budget session Wednesday night.

Commissioners agreed to use the fee schedule proposed by the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.

The proposal calls for increasing some fees for baseball players ages 7-14.

Commissioner Sid Baynes, who pushed for the fee increases at a budget session last week, was more conciliatory Wednesday night.

“The media and others focused on the 13 percent of the budget that makes up the Parks and Recreation Department, but what I was really saying was that we needed to look at all our fees to make sure we’re covering our costs as best we can,” Baynes said.

The rates OK’d by commissioners range from $25 for in-town residents playing T-ball to $65 for out-of-town residents playing in the Junior League, which is for 13-14-year-olds.

Under the proposal, athletes who live outside the town limits would pay $10 to $15 more than their in-town teammates.
