Wendell — A crash involving three tractor-trailers caused significant traffic delays on U.S. 64 near Wendell Thursday afternoon. The crash shut down one of the highway’s eastbound lanes for about two hours, authorities reported. Three people were taken to a hospital due to non-life threatening injuries.

The wreck took place about 1.2 miles east of Rolesville Road about 3 p.m. Authorities closed one lane so they could clear the scene.

Two rigs heading east had stopped on the highway due to road construction when one of them was hit by a third tractor-trailer, said Trooper J.E. Brewer of the state Highway Patrol. The impact caused the vehicle to crash into the rig in front of it, the trooper added.

The driver of the rig that caused the crash, Milton Lewis of Watkins Trucking Co., was charged with failure to reduce speed, Brewer said.
