A Wendell couple who coordinate an annual Relay for Life event are the target of an embezzlement investigation after staff at the American Cancer Society noticed several accounting problems. No arrests have been made, but Wendell police are targeting Dianna Scoggins and David Mangum in the investigation, according to a police investigator's affidavit attached to a search warrant for the couple's home on Fowlkes Street.Scoggins and Mangum did not respond to requests for comment.Over the weekend, Wendell police seized various documents and supplies connected with Relay for Life as well as an American Cancer Society donation box, donation envelopes and bank deposit bags from the couple's home. The annual event, held this year in May at the Five County Stadium near Wendell, has raised more than $1 million in the 12 years the Eastern Wake chapter has been holding events. In 2004, the chapter won an award from the American Cancer Society for raising more than $130,700 and involving more than 600 participants. The extent of the missing funds isn't known, but Wendell police indicated that Scoggins and Mangum were responsible for collecting money from donors and participants and then depositing the money into American Cancer Society accounts. On several instances, deposits weren't made, according to police accounts.Chris Green, a spokesman for the nonprofit group, said the amount of missing funds wasn't enough to cause any disruption in services.
