ZEBULON — Call it a party. Call it a celebration.

Arts in the Park is all those things and more.

Organizers are planning for more than 1,000 people at this year’s event, which will take place Saturday at Community Park in Zebulon from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Planned by the Zebulon Parks and Recreation Department, Arts in the Park marks the traditional opening of the recreation league baseball season.

Mayor Bob Matheny will throw out the ceremonial first pitch about 10 a.m. followed by the singing of the national anthem. While glovers take to the field, others will be able to enjoy entertainment on stage with the likes of Explore, a group that plays Brazil-ian music.

The percussion-heavy group will take their show to the audience after their stage performance.

Throughout the morning and into the early afternoon, they will let visitors use drum sets and maracas in a host of rhythmic games and activities.

Other stage shows include the N.C. State University cloggers and Just Paul’s Variety Show.

The main event begins at 1 p.m. when The BackBeat takes the stage. The group will play musical hits from the 1960s including songs made famous by The Beatles.

The event will also include inflatable games and plenty of food, along with fundraisers sponsored by Relay For Life teams. Debbie Wheless, who helped organize the event for the Parks and Recreation Department, says Arts in the Park is a good deal for families with children.

“If you’ve got children, it’s a great way to entertain your children for free,” Wheless said.

But she says the entertainment value extends beyond just the professional stage acts.

“It’s a great time to visit with friends,” Wheless said.
