KNIGHTDALE — More than 93 businesses gathered at Knightdale High School last week to network and introduce their names and services to residents and visitors.
The 2014 Knightdale Business Expo featured vendors from eastern Wake County and beyond, with small and large businesses mingling during the four-hour event.
The annual event gives residents a chance to see just what kinds of goods and services are offered in Knightdale the larger eastern Wake County area.
For some smaller businesses, events like the expo are integral to letting residents know of their operations.
One of the local businesses with a booth at the expo belonged to Sheila Prosser, who was named Knightdale’s Citizen of the Year at the Chamber of Commerce’s banquet in February.
Prosser runs Dream Coat Ministries, a thrift store that uses profits to buy those in need neccesities.
It’s not a cheap undertaking, which is why although her store is open to anyone in eastern Wake County, Prosser can only participate in Knightdale’s expo.
“I would love to do everything,” she said. “But our budget really only allows rent (and other expenses).”
Prosser put some of the store’s inventory to use at the expo, bringing enough clothes and knick-knacks to refresh her display every hour or so to keep passers-by engaged.
She also handed out handmade paper fortune cookies with scripture on it to remind people the importance of being a community.
In addition to familiar people, the expo also showcased some of the less-recognized business employees in the area, like Chloe, a black lab mix who is a 18 months old who helps with the Wendell-based State Pest Control.
Chloe came to the expo for the extermination company to help them showcase a special service they offer: finding and treating bedbugs.
While there are other ways to find out if someone has bedbugs, Chloe is an extra tool that can sniff them out where the eye might miss them. Bedbug-sniffing dogs aren’t an industry norm, but State Pest Control uses her in addition to more traditional methods.
