WENDELL — When Christina Miller heads off to the University of North Carolina in the fall, she’ll carry an impressive title: Class Valedictorian.
The daughter of Edward and Patricia Miller of Raleigh, Christina Miller has earned the top academic honor in the East Wake School of Health Science through a combination of smarts and hard work.
Over four years at East Wake High School, Miller carved out a 5.0 grade point average.
And though she’s planning a decidedly scientific career after college, Miller says her favorite class in high school was actually a liberal arts class.
“AP Government is not something I would have been typically interested in, but it was nice to see something that’s not what your normally think about,” Miller said. Interestingly enough, the class that challenged Miller the most in high school was a math class. She earned her first B in AB Calculus. She learned something from that experience though and it’s a lesson she hopes to put to use in college. I had to do (problems) over and over to get them. I was used to just studying my notes,” Miller said.
Though that math class may have been challenging, it’s one of her math teachers, Danielle Hewitt, who she points to as the most influential teacher she had in school. As senior class president of the School of Health Science, Miller worked closely with Hewitt who was the student council adviser.
“I think she cares a lot about her students. And I think she had some really creative ways of teaching,” Miller said.
Miller didn’t enter high school with the goal of becoming a valedictorian, but as she moved her way through school, she realized she was at the top of the list, she considered it as a goal.
“There’s a lot of competition,” Miller said.
Though her school work was always important, Miller found time to involve herself in several extracurricular activities. In addition to her role as class president, she was a member of the National Honor Society, the National Technical Honor Society, the Beta Club and the National Spanish Honor Society.
