Knightdale woman accused in scam using discarded store receipts

February 4, 2014

— Police arrested a 19-year-old woman last Monday night at a Dick’s Sporting Goods store on Sumner Boulevard, where they said she had been running a scam using discarded receipts to return merchandise for money.

According to arrests warrants, police believe Nicolette Raijene Neal of 4702 Smarty Jones Drive in Knightdale started the scam at the Dick’s store adjacent to Triangle Town Center on New Year’s Eve. An arrest report indicates Neal worked for the sporting goods store at the time.

In filing 13 counts of obtaining property by false pretenses, police said Neal would take receipts that customers had discarded, then get something on the receipt and return it for cash.

The warrants did not say how much police believe Neal got.

Most of the returns were made in the evening, though two recent returns were made in the afternoon, the warrants said.

Neal was being held in lieu of $15,000 for a court appearance. She had been released from jail as of Thursday.
