— A trio of local youth football players made their mark as they competed in the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl Week festivities held in Orlando, Fla. over the New Year’s holiday.

The players are 11-year-old Conner McCloud, and 10-year-olds Jacob Gill and Marques Roper. All three play for the Knightdale “Golden” Dragons Jr. Pee Wee team, part of the local Pop Warner circuit.

The three experienced a week-long series of events including two-a-day practices and two games in unseasonably cold, wet weather for central Florida.

Their first game was close and featured an interception by Roper, but time ran out before they could clinch a win. Their second game ended in a better result, with another interception by Roper and a touchdown pass caught by Gill to win the game.

The players competed with and against hand-picked athletes in their age group in Citrus Bowl Stadium, home of the Capital One Bowl and Russell Athletic Bowl.

They were selected to participate out of thousands of young athletes across the country.
