Former Knightdale football players complete season at Guilford College

Former Knightdale High School football standouts JerMario Gooch and John Scott recently completed the 2013 football season at Guilford College.

Gooch, a 5-foot-8, 155-pound sophomore defensive back, started in all 10 games for the Quakers as a cornerback and kick returner. He had 33 solo tackles and totaled 46 on the season, which ranked fifth on the team.

Gooch grabbed a career-high three interceptions for a total of 34 yards and had a team-best eight pass break ups. As a kick returner, he totaled 181 yards on nine returns with his best return coming at Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Washington and Lee University for 43 yards.

He ranked second on the team in interceptions and kick returns. Gooch’s best performance was on Oct. 26 against Randolph-Macon College when he tallied nine tackles, five solo, and broke up a pass.

Scott, a 6-foot, 215-pound junior linebacker, played in the Quakers’ first two games before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury. He totaled seven tackles.

Third-year head coach Chris Rusiewicz’s Quakers posted a 6-4 overall record, 5-2 ODAC, which marked the program’s first winning season since 2007. Guilford finished second in the league.
