Zebulon Middle School football survives close one against Wendell

— The Cougars scored with 4 minutes to play and held off a final drive by Wendell to claim a 22-20 win in a battle of unbeaten middle school football teams on Wednesday, Oct. 16.

The triumph improved Zebulon’s record to 5-0 with three weeks left in the regular season. The Wolves went away 4-1.

Wendell went up 6-0 in the first quarter on a 10-yard pass from Messiah Harvey-Cleveland to Victor Ocasio.

The Cougars took the lead with a 62-yard rush by Trey Holden and Izaya Hinton’s run for 2.

Wendell led 14-8 at the half following touchdown and conversion runs by Justice Burgess.

Holden opened second-half scoring with a 39-yard halfback pass to Hinton. Holden ran in the conversion to give the Cougars a 16-14 lead.

The Wolves answered with a 60-yard halfback pass from Burgess to Christian Bland early in the fourth, but the decisive extra points attempt failed.

Holden in the final minutes made the Wolves pay as he scored on a 49-yard rush. Zebulon’s final conversion attempt was no good, but the Cougars stopped the Wolves’ next possession and ran out the clock.

Wendell closes out the season with home games against Wake Forest and East Wake, and a road game at Heritage.

Zebulon plays its final home game Wednesday, Oct. 23, against Rolesville and finishes the season with games at Wake Forest and East Wake. The Cougars are vying for their third consecutive undefeated season and third straight Northern Conference title.
