Wendell All-Star baseball teams advance to state tournament

From staff reportsJuly 25, 2013

— Three All-Star baseball teams will represent Wendell Parks and Recreation in the Tar Heel Leagues Inc. state tournament July 25-28 in Williamston.

Two of the teams earned state tournament berths out of the same age division. The 7-8 Wendell Blue team claimed the title in the recent Tar Heel Leagues District 6 tournament, while the 7-8 Wendell White crew will enter the state championships as the No. 3 team from the district.

The 13-14 Wendell Blue team also won the District 6 round, outscoring its opponents by a total of 49-4.

The 7-8 Wendell Blue boys’ district title was secured in the bottom of the eighth inning against Rocky Mount, which led 11-10 heading into the frame.

After Rocky Mount made two outs of Wendell’s first two batters, Brett Fuller smacked a double. Drew Lanphere then hit to second base and Rocky Mount’s rushed throw to first sailed high, allowing Fuller to score and tie the game as Lanphere advanced to third. That set the stage for Wendell Blue slugger Dean Wall to finish what Fuller started in the inning.

Wall, who had hit his first-ever, over-the-fence home run earlier in the tournament, laced a deep ball that appeared to be another homer but stayed just inside the fence. It was still enough to plate Lanphere, however, to win the game and and the championship.

Rocky Mount will join the two Wendell All-Star teams as the three representing District 6 at the state level.

Wendell’s 13-14 Blue team, which had gone undefeated in the Southern Johnston Baseball Association Invitational in June, did the same to finish first in the Tar Heel Leagues district round.

In the title game against Louisburg, Wendell scored first, with three runs in the third inning and added four more runs before winning the game 7-1. Will Davis pitched all seven innings and took the win for Wendell.

Wendell’s All Stars topped Zebulon by the same score in their third game and beat Louisburg by a greater margin, 13-1, in their second outing. They opened the tournament with a 22-1 mauling of Wake Forest.

Louisburg had to defeat Zebulon to appear in the championship game. Louisburg and Zebulon are the other two 13-14 District 6 teams that will compete in this week’s state round in Williamston.
