Joan Harmon Burkhardt

Joan Harmon Burkhardt, 77, of Raleigh died Thursday, June 6, 2013 peacefully at her home with her family by her side. Joanie was born April 14, 1936 in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late Harold G. Harmon and Mary Vogt Harmon.

As an active member of Christ Episcopal Church in Raleigh, Joanie participated in many activities that enriched the lives of others including mission trips and outreach programs. She enjoyed traveling, hiking in the mountains and spending time with her “Grands.” Joanie was an avid sports fan and supported the teams from her alma mater, Florida State University, and the University of North Carolina. She was also a member of the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by her sister, Barbara Ganey of Gainesville, Fl; sons, Bob Burkhardt and wife, Dianne of Raleigh, Thom Burkhardt of Wendell and David Burkhardt and wife, Kelly of Raleigh as well as devoted grandchildren Emerson, Sophie and Hodge Burkhardt.

A memorial service to celebrate Joanie’s life will be held at 11am on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at Christ Episcopal Church in Raleigh. The family will receive friends in the parish hall following the service.

Special thanks to the staff of Hospice of Wake County and to the nurses of The Cypress and The Rosewood who provided tremendous love, care and support for Joanie and her entire family.
