Wendell man found dead in Burke County

From staff reportsMay 28, 2013

— Emergency responders in Burke County say a Wendell man was reported dead Sunday in the Steele Creek section of the Pisgah National Forest.

Jason Edwards, 29, died after jumping into the creek, said Cecil Huffman, deputy Burke County fire marshal. After recovering Edwards’ body on Monday, emergency responders were unsure how he died, Huffman said.

“I don’t know if he hit his head, or if he got overcome and ended up going over (the falls),” said Huffman, who described the falls as “at least 20 feet tall.”

Edwards was camping deep in the forest with his wife, Huffman said.
