Belk stores turn 125

The Belk store in Zebulon will celebrate the company’s 125th anniversary with an open house at 9:30 a .m. Wednesday, May 29, at 164 Wakelon St., Zebulon. Refreshments will be served to the public and there will be gift card giveaways and other special in store promotions.

There is also an invitation-only breakfast.Founded in 1888 by William Henry Belk in Monroe, the Charlotte, based company is the nation’s largest family owned and operated department store company.

Marsh joins Hospice of Wake County

Dr. Stephen Marsh, of Zebulon, has been hired as a hospice and palliative care physician at Hospice of Wake County.

Marsh, a graduate of Wake Forest University’s Bowman Gray School of Medicine, East Carolina University, N.C. State University, and UNC-Chapel Hill, will provide the medical component for the hospice and palliative care programs and serve as the attending physician when needed.

Labor department recognizes local businesses

The N.C. Department of Labor honored Triangle area employers and employees at the agency’s annual safety awards banquet May 17. Several eastern Wake County companies were recognized at the event.

The awards honor outstanding on-the-job safety achievements of each company during 2012. M.J. Soffe Company of Wendell, received a first-year silver award. Devil Dog Manufacturing Co. in Zebulon, received a first-year gold award. Wake Stone Corp., in Knightdale also received a first-year gold award. Johnston Controls, Inc.’s GlaxoSmithKline account, in Zebulon received an award for 1 million hours of on-the-job safety achievement.
