East Wake Senior Center host awards event

The East Wake Senior Center in Wendell celebrated the 40-year anniversary of Resources for Seniors with aceremony, May 15. The center is a non-profit organization that operates under Resources for Seniors in Raleigh.

The Lifetime Attendance award went to Celine Merz; Most Outstanding Participant award, Ruby Jones; the Friendliest award, Joyce Poole and Olive Martin; Best Sense of Humor award, Robert Clark; Best Dressed award, Martha Debnam and Mr. and Mrs. East Wake, Gene Bender and Queen Tyler.

There was a lot of entertainment at this event including solo’s performed by Elmer “Joe” Bunn and Jimmy and Brenda Lewis. There was a dance performance by the East Wake Strutters, who practice their art at the center.

Organizers decided to celebrate the anniversary in May because May has been considered “Older Americans Month since 1963.

The center is open Monday - Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m., at 323 Lake Drive, Wendell. Anyone who is 55 or older can come and participate in the daily activities. Some of the activities include aerobics, craft and sewing, bingo, educational seminars, and line dancing.
