Bobby Fitts was named last week as Zebulon’s new finance director. Town Manager Rick Hardin made a good decision to elevate the department’s number two man into the top spot.
It says a lot about a man when he knows how to bide his time.
And, that’s exactly what Fitts did. He chose not to apply for the position the last time it came open, 10 years ago, despite having already worked in the department at that point for six years. He said last week he knew he wasn’t ready for the position at that point.
That he applied at all suggests that, now, he is ready and he knows it.
Fitts enters the position at a delicate time. The economy is slowly recovering from the worst recession since the Great Depression and changes in state law leave the town facing the possible loss of hundreds of thousands in additional dollars.
Fitts will have to be surgeon-like as he prepares financial budgets. He will have to be sharp when it’s time to look for a good deal. He will have to be sure of himself when he explains his recommendations to town commissioners, several of whom will have done their homework before Fitts ever speaks a word.
Bobby Fitts is a good man. Hardin, the town manager, has done a good job over the years of surrounding himself with strong department heads. He’s been wise to give them the freedom to do their jobs. Fitts now joins that group. We wish him well and we offer our encouragement to him that, as he knows within himself, he is ready.
