Zebulon man graduates
Adam Byrd, of 1605 Open Pastures Way in Zebulon, was one of about 1,300 students who took part in Virginia Tech University’s fall commencement ceremony held Dec. 21, 2012, in Cassell Coliseum. Byrd received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree in civil engineering from the College of Engineering.
Knightdale teen earns service award
Knightdale resident Sydney Southerland was recognized with special honors as she received the Sud-Freemark Award of Service during the 43rd annual Youth Legislative Assembly, March 15-17 in Raleigh.
Of more than 200 students from across the state who participated in the event, Southerland, a student at Southeast Raleigh High School, was one of 22 students to earn special honors.
The Sud-Freemark Award of Service is given to students who have participated in the Youth Legislative Assembly for four years, with three of those years being on the leadership team.
The assembly is presented by the Youth Advocacy and Involvement Office of the N.C. Department of Administration.
Scout earns Gold Award
Anita Jordan Tyndall of Wendell has earned the Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting.
For her Gold Award project, Tyndall led sign language classes for 7- to 10-year-old children at Knightdale Parks and Recreation’s summer camp.
Tyndall had the lessons videotaped to create practice-at-home DVDs. Her lessons are also on YouTube.
Tyndall is a first year student at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she is majoring in Professions in Deafness. Her goal is to become an ASL interpreter. She is a current Girl Scout alumna and was a member of Troop 925, led by Maria Fry.
