Church to honor veteran
Hand of God Church Ministries in Zebulon will hold a military retirement service at 2 p.m., on Saturday, March 30 for Master Sgt. Herbert Preston Gray. State Sen. Dan Blue will be the keynote speaker. Ceremony tickets are available for a donation of $20 each. The church is located at 1609 Wendell Boulevard.
Zebulon man honored by VT
Adam Byrd, of 1605 Open Pastures Way in Zebulon, was one of about 1,300 honored at Virginia Tech University’s fall commencement ceremony held Dec. 21, 2012, in Cassell Coliseum. Byrd received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree in civil engineering from the College of Engineering.
Zebulon woman becomes Guardian ad Litem advocate
Desiree Theresa Cook of Zebulon has completed her training and taken her oath to become a volunteer Guardian ad Litem advocate.
Cook, alongside a Guardian ad Litem attorney, will advocate for the best interests of children who have experienced abuse and neglect.
The North Carolina Guardian ad Litem program provides trained, independent advocates to represent and promote the best interests of abused, neglected and dependent children in the state court system.
Cook is one of 11 new Guardian ad Litem advocates who will be serving Franklin, Vance, Warren and Granville Counties.
Knightdale teen earns service award
Knightdale resident Sydney Southerland was recognized with special honors as she received the Sud-Freemark Award of Service during the 43rd annual Youth Legislative Assembly, held March 15-17 in Raleigh.
Of more than 200 students from across the state who participated in the event, Southerland, a student at Southeast Raleigh High School, was one of 22 students to earn special honors.
The Sud-Freemark Award of Service is given to students who have participated in the Youth Legislative Assembly for four years, with three of those years being on the leadership team.
The assembly is presented by the Youth Advocacy and Involvement Office of the N.C. Department of Administration.
