ZEBULON - A Rocky Mount man who works in Zebulon gained the attention of Zebulon police twice in the same week in late January.

Police are still investigating an incident in which they believe Darrell Frank Finkley Jr., 25, of 836 N. Pine St. in Rocky Mount, stole $1,037 from the Zebulon Food Lion on Wakelon Drive.

According to Zebulon Det. Candace Thompson, a cashier at the grocery mentioned to store manager Robert Anderson that Finkley, also a cashier at the grocery, had arrived for hours late for his shift on Wednesday, Jan. 25.

When Anderson searched for Finkley inside the store and didn’t find him, he reportedly checked surveillance video and saw Finkley take the money from the store. The crime was committed around 7 p.m. and Anderson reported it around 7:15.

“He walked in, clocked in, walked over to a register, opened the register, took the money and left,” Thompson said. “It’s pretty likely there will be charges. It would be a larceny by employee or embezzlement charge, which is a felony.”

Thompson explained the case might have been closed by now had Finkley not turned himself in to the Wake County Sheriff’s Department within two days of the larceny and claimed he needed mental evaluation. As of Wednesday, Finkley was said to be seeking mental health treatment in Wake County.

On Jan. 22, just three days before the incident at Food Lion, Finkley was arrested at 3:45 a.m. at the Zebulon Walmart and charged with resisting a law officer, damage to property and consuming alcohol in location where it isn’t permitted.

A Walmart employee called police and reported there was a naked man, later determined to be Finkley, inside the women’s restroom. By the time police arrived he had his clothes back on.

Thompson said when Finkley saw Sgt. Scott Bassett, Off. David Wanamaker and Off. Brandon Lane at the back of the store a chase followed and ended at the front door, where Finkley ran into the sliding glass door. He bent the door frame knocked the door off the track, doing about $2,000 worth of damage.

Finkley was arrested and taken to Wake County Jail where he posted $1,500 bond after three and a half hours of time in prison.

Aside from a pair of traffic violations, Finkley’s only criminal history in North Carolina is a conviction for misdemeanor larceny in Nash County in 2008. He was issued unsupervised probation for the offense, according to police.
