ZEBULON - Police are investigating an incident in which two men drew firearms on a pair of Zebulon teenage boys walking on Wakefield Street, but didn’t steal anything or do any harm.
The incident was reported around 9 p.m. on Jan. 20 after the 15- and 17-year-old allegedly provoked two men in a gold sedan believed to be a Lexus.
The two men got out of the vehicle and approached the teenagers. One suspect was carrying a shotgun and the other a pistol.
The two men didn’t take anything from the juveniles and didn’t try to, according to Zebulon police Lt. Scott Finch. No injuries resulted from the encounter.
“It appears to be a situation where the kids said something that angered the people,” Finch said. “I think it was an isolated scare tactic because of the words exchanged prior to that. They just got back in the car and left.”
One of the two men was listed as a 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-9 black man with a light brown complexion, an afro and a goatee. He is thought to be between the ages of 30 and 40.
The second suspect was listed as a six feet to 6-foot-3 black man with a dark brown complexion.
Both men were wearing black shirts and pants at the time of the incident, with the taller suspect also wearing a black hat.
“The identity of the suspects is still under investigation and we’re following up on leads now,” Finch said. “You can’t really put a timeline on something like that, but our leads are good enough not to close the case.”
Finch said the crime is best described as an attempted armed robbery, because nothing was taken, but guns were drawn.
“In order commit a true armed robbery you have to actually take something,” Finch said.
