DURHAM - The East Wake Academy Lady Eagles couldn’t overcome poor shooting and rebounding as they fell to Voyager Academy 49-39 on Wednesday.

East Wake Academy (8-10, 4-3 Central Carolina Athletic Conference) started the game slow, scoring only 6 points as Voyager got off to a fast start and took a 6-point lead through the first quarter.

Voyager maintained the lead the entire game even as the Eagle defense picked up to cut the score to 2 points in the third quarter.

The Eagles made only seven of the 34 shots they took in the paint, and snatched 14 of the 46 total rebounds.

“We’re a bit one dimensional now and rely heavily on our captains to do it for us, but they can’t do it alone each night,” Eagle coach Maurice Lock said. “We missed close to 140 lay-ups from our post players the last seven games. That has been the difference for us.”

Still, Lock praised the efforts of his captains. Maylynn Hall led in scoring with 10 points, snatched nine rebounds, and tallied four assists and eight steals. Kirsty Siller added 8 points and led the team with 14 steals. Courtney Dutmers led the team with 13 rebounds, and added six steals and 5 points.

“They are the team captains for a reason and they proved it tonight,” Lock said. “Kirsty, Maylynn and Courtney worked extremely hard and left everything on the court. Those girls did what they could to turn the game around, but poor post play has been our Achilles’ heel all season.”

The loss marked the Lady Eagles’ second in a row. Lock remains positive about the closing weeks of the season.

“Those girls are working to try and get out of it, but its been tough for them,” he said. “With focus and belief I know they’ll eventually find their way out of it. They’re just too good a players to allow it to continue and they have stayed positive.”
