SMITHFIELD - Clayton has been a model of consistency atop Greater Neuse River 4A boys’ swimming competitions in recent seasons, and the Comets got it done again on Saturday.
Marty Ringgold’s deep squad ran up 401 points to 355 for second-place Garner at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center to win the conference championship for the fifth straight year.
East Wake finished third with 253 points, as Macon Crowder - who won the 100-yard butterfly (55.42) and 500 freestyle (4:58.1) – took most outstanding swimmer honors.
West Johnston finished fourth with 222 points, followed by Knightdale with 148 and Harnett Central 112 as only six schools fielded teams.
“We thought coming in it would be close with Garner,” Ringgold said. “We couldn’t afford any mistakes today. Nobody got DQ’d and everybody swam good times.
“We did the best we could do and the rest was up to the math. We set the bar high and we met our expectations.”
The Comets took the victory on the strength of individual event championships from Alex Simpson in the 100 backstroke (58.96), Brett Bailey in the 200 freestyle (2:04.49), Austin Fentress in the 50 freestyle (23.37) and victories in all three relays.
“It was a good swim,” said Bailey, who was on both the winning freestyle relay teams. “I just tried to pace myself through the event. I knew it was going to be a tough (individual) race, and fortunately it worked out well for me.”
Simpson, who was also part of the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays, said the year-round swimmers on the Comets’ roster are key.
“That’s pretty much our base, and then the smaller guys who haven’t been swimming as long have given us a lot of depth,” he said. “We had numbers the past couple of years. This time we didn’t have as many and it was tougher, but we got it done.”
West’s Andrew Henry, an Eastern Michigan recruit, won the 200 individual medley (2:04.71) and 100 freestyle (49.5). Henry’s nearest competitor in the medley race finished nearly 14 seconds behind him. He won by four seconds in the 100 free.
East’s Daniel Duttman took the 100 breaststroke (1:05.99).
Garner’s Daniel Gerrald won the one-meter diving with a score of 269.90, which was held on Friday.
Garner finished second in the 200 free relay as Colin Kroll, Zac Wilson, Max Kuhns and Devin Green team up on a time of 1:39.6. The Trojans were also third in the 200 medley relay with Matt Smothers, Carter Allison, Kroll and Green. A third place finish came Garner’s way in the 400 free relay as well with Green, Kroll, Kuhns and Daniel Gerrald.
Green and Kuhns were second and third in the 50 free with swims of 23.71 and 24.42, respectively.
Smothers finished fourth in the backstroke.
West Johnston’s boys were fifth in 400 free relay and Wildcat entry David Manross took fifth in 500 free.
Crowder said he was happy with his performance and a solid outing from the Warriors.
“I did all right,” he said. “Any time you win two events at a conference meet it’s a good day. I’m glad I’ve been able to do it all four years. The 200 free is probably my best event, and I’ll swim that and the 100 at regionals. We were pretty good as a team, too. Getting into the top three, I think we’re pretty happy.”
