ZEBULON - Firefighters were called in to put out a controlled burn off Perry Curtis Road that got out of control late Monday afternoon.
The Zebulon and Corinth Holders fire departments, and the North Carolina Forest Service at 8:30 p.m. responded to the field located northwest of the dead end on Silver Belle Road and south of Perry Curtis Road. The land is owned by Jimmy Lee.
A controlled burn of 60-70 acres of land had gotten out of control after trees caught fire and fell across the burn line, according to Zebulon Fire Chief Sidney Perry.
It was the second time firefighters had visited the plot of land that day.
It took firefighters a couple hours to contain the fire on their second outing. No one was hurt in the incident and no damage was done to neighboring residences.
Firefighters spent a matter of minutes at the site after a first call around 5:15 p.m., once they realized it was a controlled burn of the land, which was mostly underbrush and grass with some trees and limbs in the mix.
“A neighbor called it in concerned it was getting close to their house,” Perry said. “We didn’t stay out there that long the first time because we found out he was burning on purpose.”
