RALEIGH - Local telephone calls using seven-digits in the 919 area code ends Friday, March 30. And the next day callers will have dial 10 digits using either 919 or 984 plus the seven-digit local telephone number.
The N.C. Utilities Commission’s approval set Saturday, March 31 as the date the second area code is adopted.
If customers have automatic dialing equipment, including alarm or security systems, abbreviated dialing, or a PBX system, they will have to make changes to accommodate mandatory 10-digit dialing including, if necessary, working with their service provider.
Extended Area Service calls between 919 or 984 area codes and customers in the 252, 336 and 910 area codes will also require 10-digit dialing. Dialing three digit numbers such as 211, 311, 411, 511, 611, 711, 811, and 911 will remain the same and are not impacted by the new 10-digit dialing requirement.
Customers seeking new telephone numbers in the current 919 area code region may be assigned the new 984 area code as early as April 30. Existing telephone numbers in the 919 area code will remain the same.
