KNIGHTDALE - One person was shot by Knightdale police after officers were dispatched to the location of an alleged suicide threat on Jan. 12.
The altercation occurred at 12:30 a.m. No officers were injured.
William A. Taylor, 66, was said Thursday to be in custody at WakeMed with non-life threatening injuries.
Officers Travis Price and Ronald Fullerton arrived at Taylor’s home at 324 Park Avenue and were met by a relative of Taylor’s.
While Price and Fullerton were speaking with the relative, Taylor appeared on the front stoop. He was holding a gun to his head, according to Knightdale Chief of Public Safety Shawn Brown.
“From what I understand, the man was given commands to drop his weapon,” Brown said. “Instead, he pointed it at the officers.”
At that point, the officers discharged their weapons and a bullet struck Taylor in the leg.
The State Bureau of Investigation, the Wake County Sheriff’s Office and Knightdale detectives are working together to investigate the incident.
The officers are on leave while the SBI investigates, which is standard procedure in a shooting involving an officer.
“They’re pretty shook up,” Brown said.
It remains unclear what prompted Taylor’s suicide attempt.
