WENDELL - Everybody loves a good pep rally. It’s fun to cheer for your team, the drum line keeps up a steady beat and fans get pumped up for the game.

So what if the team was full of students and the game involved getting good grades and performing well in school?

It doesn’t make the pep rally any less boisterous.

That’s what East Wake School of Arts, Education and Global Studies administrators learned earlier this month when they gathered their students in the East Wake auditorium to celebrate the first quarter’s academic success.

Students were recognized for invidual achievements, including good attendance and good behavior. They were also recognized for hitting school-wide academic goals for achievement in several academic courses, from Biology and English to Algebra and Computer Applications.

Oh, and the students got to watch as assistant principal Mike James made good on a couple wagers he made earlier in the year. James donned a red clown nose, which he wore all day the day of the pep rally to recognize the proficiency of students in a Biology class in which every student passed end of course tests. Then he took off his windbreaker to reveal a bright red N.C. State shirt, the consequences of another wager he made for good academic performance.

Both make-goods on James part drew cheers of approval from students, who also got the chance to celebrate their favorite teachers during the pep rally when the school’s first-quarter teachers of the month were recognized in front of the crowd.
