ZEBULON - East Wake Academy’s girls basketball team put an end to a five-game losing streak with a 46-24 win over St. Thomas More on Dec. 16.
With the win, East Wake Academy moved back above the .500 mark on the season.
“We needed a game like today to come in and trust each other to perform,” Eagle coach Maurice Lock said. “Although we didn’t play at our best, we really improved in key areas from the previous games.”
After a slow start the Eagles picked up the defense and took control of the game halfway through the first quarter. The team led the entire game despite poor interior shooting, and captains paved the road to victory.
Senior shooting guard Kirsty Siller led the Eagles with 16 points and senior forward Courtney Dutmers led the team with 14 rebounds, six steals and five assists. Dutmers also added 4 points and a block.
Junior center Ashleigh Pickett tallied 12 points and five rebounds, senior Forward Gracie Barham added 10 points and six rebounds, and sophomore Liz Garrett added two blocks, five rebounds and 2 points.
The win boosted the Eagles’ record to 7-6 on the season and 3-2 in the CCAL conference.
Lock said the team still has some kinks to work out.
“Once we pick up our aggression as a team and make more layups we’ll be highly competitive going forward in the season,” Lock said. “It’s a process and these ladies are up to the challenge.”
