ZEBULON - The East Wake Academy Eagles had an undefeated record on the road this season at the start of the week.

That streak was ended by a 53-38 loss to Woods Charter on Monday, and a 63-36 loss to Hobgood Academy on Tuesday left the Eagles with a five-game losing streak.

Hobgood came out with a fast pace and ended the game in the same fashion while East Wake Academy (4-9, 2-3) had another poor night of protecting and shooting the ball on Tuesday.

The Eagles finished with 22 turnovers and shot 31 percent from the floor.

“Hobgood played well, we had no answer for their big man tonight and again we could not score when we had the opportunities,” East Wake Academy coach Miguel Bonano said. “We get a few practice dates to work on some things and prepare for St. Thomas More Academy.”

The series between East Wake Academy and Woods Charter has become a very tense affair and has often led to tight and fast paced games.

Monday night’s Central Carolina Athletic League game between the two teams wasn’t much different.

Woods senior guard Cameron Whitson started off strong scoring the first several baskets for Woods to open the first quarter. The Eagle’s offense finally got rolling and eventually took the 12-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.

East Wake Academy could have gone into the half with a 3-point lead, but senior Jimmy Polito committed a foul while challenging a 3-point buzzer beater by Osman Sabaiti. Sabaiti missed the 3-point basket, but converted on all three free throws to tie the game at 27 at the break.

Bonano spoke of his Eagle’s ability to make adjustments in the first half that slowed down the Wolves.

“We saw Whitson taking over the game so we tried to force someone else to pick up the scoring for Woods,” he said. “The guys made great decisions after our adjustment and it worked perfectly.”

Coming out of the break the Eagles immediately put 2 points on the board off of a quick play to Brandon Williams but could not manage to knock down any more of the chances created in the third quarter. The scoring momentum for the Wolves faded in the third quarter as well — as they scored just 9 points — but the 17 fourth-quarter points from Woods Charter was enough for the 15-point win.

“The inability to convert our chances hurt us a lot,” Bonano said. “We played a great game in all areas except for making those shots. Our defensive adjustment was good, protecting the ball was good and we even had the looks we wanted, but they would not fall down.”

East Wake Academy was led by Polito with 18 points, while Malachi Rocquemore had 8 points, and Damarr and Terrance McCarthy had 4 points each.
