GARNER - The Trojans played a stifling defense and poured on the points for 32 minutes, blowing away East Wake 103-45 in their Greater Neuse River 4-A matchup on the Trojans’ court Tuesday night.
And the Trojans made their point from the outset, scoring the game’s first 14 points and leading 20-3 after the first quarter.
Cameron Redd scored 20 points with nine rebounds to lead five players in double figures for Garner (6-0, 2-0). Josh McClain added 14 points, followed by Dominique Reed with 12 points and Larry Richardson and Demarcus Sanford with 10 points each. Thirteen players scored for the Trojans, who lost senior guard and co-captain Gavin Wilson to a sprained knee in the opening minute.
“I was kind of upset because of Gavin’s injury,” said Trojan coach Eddie Gray, whose defending conference champions have won 32 of their last 33 games. “But I thought everybody played well, especially the bench guys in the second half.
“We missed some easy shots we should have made tonight — we missed 10 in the paint in the first half, so I wasn’t pleased with that. But I was really pleased with the pace of the game and I liked the way we executed our defensive schemes and kept pressure on the ball. We got it going. It’s hard to argue with that kind of performance, but we can get better.”
Chris Pernell tallied 12 points for East Wake (1-6, 0-2), which had nobody else score more than five points.
Garner won the rebound battle 40-19 and forced 31 turnovers while committing 11.
“We played OK after the first quarter, but we turned the ball over too much and didn’t get back on defense,” East Wake coach Darrin Stinson said. “They’re as good as last year’s team, maybe better.
It was the second time the Trojans had eclipsed the century mark this season, along with a 103-72 romp against Wilson Fike on Nov. 29. Garner’s only game within 27 points this season was its 68-58 win against Middle Creek on Dec. 2.
“We worked well together as a team and our defense was really strong,” Redd said. “Good defense is what’s making us go. Every time we break the huddle we emphasize defense. If we keep that up it can take us where we want to go.”
East Wake’s best quarter was the second, as the Warriors scored 17 points to the Trojans’ 26 after getting off to the frigid start.
“We played a little harder that quarter,” Pernell said. “But I think some people played scared. We’re going to have to step it up. They’ll probably be the best team we see, but we have to play better than that.”
