ZEBULON - The East Wake Academy girls basketball team broke a six-game winning streak with a 65-34 loss to New Life Camp on Monday.
The Storm of New Life Camp held true to their name as the Eagles were hit with the perfect storm of pressure defense and high percentage shooting in the non-conference game.
New Life jumped out to a 23-9 lead after the first quarter. The Eagles limited the Storm to a 10-point second quarter, but in the end the speed, athleticism and defensive pressure of New Life proved too much for the home team.
“It was tough game for our girls,” Eagle head coach Maurice Lock said. “Not only because of the pressure applied by New Life, but also because many of our veteran players resigned early in the game leading to 38 turnovers. There were many occasions when a ball was stolen from us and we stood there and watched without defensive recovery.”
Sophomore center Liz Garrett proved to be one of the few bright marks for the Eagles on the night, scoring four points, and leading the team with three blocks and 11 rebounds.
Lock said the 6-2 East Wake Academy team needs to remember the game when the road gets tough going forward.
“Our girls are a much better team than we showed tonight,” Lock said. “We discussed it, we will definitely learn from it and we have moved on. It’s a long season and we intend to improve with each coming week.”
