SMITHFIELD - Garner’s girls and East Wake’s boys swimming teams opened their Greater Neuse River 4A Conference swim meet schedule with victories Wednesday at the Smithfield Aquatics and Recreation Center.
The two teams traded off runner up finishes in those races as well, with Garner’s boys just two points behind the Warriors (148 ½ to 146 ½) and East Wake’s girls 20 points behind Garner’s girls (148-128).
East Wake claimed two of the three relay event wins, which count 16 team points each. The Warriors won the 200-yard medley and the 400 relay. Austin Boyette, Macon Crowder, Daniel Duttman and Jacob Parks teamed up on a swim of 1:58.05 in the 200 medley.
The 400 free relay victory went to Crowder, Boyette, Duttman and Alston Willard.
Garner was second in both of those relay events, but won the 200 freestyle relay. Colin Kroll, Ben Hartgrove, Max Kuhns and Devin Green combined on that win in 1:42.29. The Trojan team of Zac Wilson, Andrew Squires, Matt Smothers and Daniel Gerrald were second in the same race at 1:50.52.
The Warriors also tallied up five individual event victories between four swimmers.
East Wake standout Macon Crowder had a big day individually as well with wins in the 200 free (1:53.04) and the 500 (5:24.34).
Warrior teammates Duttman won the 200 individual medley (2:16.22) and Boyette claimed the top spot in the 100 backstroke (1:09.82). Jacob Parks gave East Wake another individual win in the 100 breaststroke at 1:25.5.
Garner’s Gerrald won the 100 freestyle at 57.94 and Green won the 50 free (24.05).
Knightdale’s Patrick Capps was the other boys individual event winner on Wednesday. He won the 100 butterfly at 1:01.68.
Garner swept all three girls relay victories, taking the 400 free relay in 4:24.35 with Emily Martin, Gabi Dugal, Natalie Buitrago and Maggie Ennis competing. The Trojans’ 200 medley team (winners in 2:07.49) included Ennis, Buitrago, Emily Martin and Jessica Martin.
In the 200 free relay, Iva Early, Ennis and the Martins (Emily and Jessica) prevailed in 1:56.6.
Garner relay teams finished second in both the 200 free and 400 free relays as well.
The Trojans earned individual victories from Emily Martin in the breaststoke (1:14.36) and Buitrago (1:04.41) in the 100 free.
East Wake’s Savannah Phillips grabbed victories in the 200 individual medley in 2:36.44 and the 100 backstroke in 1:08.63. Miranda Phillips took the butterfly win for the Warriors in 1:14.45, while Rachel Crowder earned the top spot in the 500 (6:53.49).
Knightdale swimmers took two individual event triumphs as well. Dameron Morgan won the 200 free in 2:32.67 and Tyler Cornett won the 50 freestyle at 28.84 seconds.
The Knights finished third in both the girls and boys team standings with 93 girls team points and 73 boys points.
Southeast Raleigh’s girls were sixth in both the 200 free relay and the 400 free relay with the quartet of Brittany Beal, Aurora Burkus-Matesevac, Jessica Joyner and Sarah Woodside.
