WENDELL - Saturday marked a big day for local youth players in the East Wake Football League.
Two Knightdale teams and two Wendell teams played for three Super Bowl titles at East Wake High School, and both Knightdale teams won titles.
Knightdale and Wendell Mini Mites squared off in the first of the three Super Bowl games and Knightdale came out on top, 26-21.
Wendell (7-4) led 21-20 with just over a minute left in the game when Knightdale (10-1) called on Mini Mite Andrew Doss three straight times out of a Wildcat package to score the game-winning touchdown in 43 seconds.The South Division No. 4 seed Rams upset the North Division No. 1 Clayton Blue team in the first round of the playoffs and handed South Division No. 2 Clayton Blue a loss in the semifinals to meet South No. 1 Knightdale in the big show.
In the Mighty Mite game that followed, Knightdale (9-2) and Fuquay-Varina (9-2) were tied at 8 early in the fourth quarter, but the Knights scored 14 unanswered points to clinch their third Super Bowl in the last four years with a 22-8 victory.
Davion Carrington intercepted a Bengal pass and returned it 35 yards to set up a 15-8 Knightdale lead in the final quarter. The Knights were looking for a first down to run out the clock with 50 seconds left in the game when Carrington broke free for a 25-yard score to secure the win. Jamar McLain rushed for the extra point.
Knightdale's first score came when Noah Douglas targeted Christopher Sanders on a 35-yard touchdown pass. Carrington added a 2-point conversion.
Knightdale (South No. 3 seed) beat the South Division's top-seeded Wendell Mighty Mite team to make it to the Super Bowl game against South No. 2 seed Fuquay-Varina.
The win marked the Knightdale Mighty Mites' seventh Super Bowl win.
In the final Super Bowl of the day, Fuquay-Varina's Pee Wees held off a late rally attempt by Wendell to win 48-32.
The game went back and fourth until the cross from the third quarter to the fourth. Wendell (8-3) scored to pull within 10, 42-32, and opted for a 2-point conversion attempt to bring the difference to one possession.
C.J. Mason caught the conversion pass from Peyton Creech, but the play was reversed on an illegal motion penalty. The Rams' second attempt was denied, and after a failed onside kick Fuquay-Varina (10-1) was able to preserve its lead for the victory.Wendell's fullback and key linebacker Trent Peace missed the entire second half of the game after twisting his ankle just before the break.Wendell, the South No. 3 seed, had to beat South No. 1 Knightdale in the semifinals to make the Super Bowl appearance against the South No. 2 seed Bengals.
